Common Sneezeweed (Helenium autumnale)

Common Names: autumn sneezeweed, swamp sunflower, sneezewort

Status – Native to Central and North America and southern Ontario. Listed as Common

Sun – Full sun to partial sun

Soil/Habitat – Favours moist, low-lying meadows or edges of damp woodlands. Prefers rich, moist soils and will struggle in dry sites.

Water – average to wet soils. Not drought tolerant.

Dimensions – Height – 2 – 5 feet Width – 1 – 2 feet

Flowers – yellow daisy-like flowers from August to October.

Common Sneezeweed flowers

Notes – Listed as ‘ special value to native bees ‘ since this plant is an important source of late-season pollen. Attracts butterflies, moths, and long-tongued pollinators such as honeybees, and bumblebees. Birds feast on seed heads in the Fall.
